Polar processes in planetary atmospheres
Workshop and seminar for young scientists
Location: Apatity, Murmansk region, Polar Geophysical Institute
Dates: April 16-19, 2013

The workshop is focused on complex studies of polar phenomena in the atmospheres of Solar
System bodies, by means of spacecraft exploration, ground-based observations and numerical
simulations. All aspects of dynamics, energy balance, photochemistry of planetary atmospheres,
their interactions with the solar wind and underlying surface, are subject to invited lectures and
contributed talks. Particular attention will be given to the exchange of plans and ideas on future
developments in spacecraft and telescopic instruments and general circulation models of
planetary atmospheres. Interested students are welcome to attend the workshop in order to get
involved in international projects on space research.
Apatity is a mining settlement at the outskirt of Hibines mountains – a compact (~60 km in
diameter) region of ancient, highly weathered rocks located in the middle of Kola peninsula. The
town hosts one of the regional science centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences, part of
which is the Polar Geophysical Institute (http://pgia.ru/). The highlands of Hibines represent
perhaps the most accessible example of classical tundra with unique biological diversity. Despite
high latitude (150 km North to the Polar Circle) local climate is relatively soft due to the
influence of Gulfstream. Nearby town Kirovsk, besides to apatite mines, has ski resorts popular
among tourists from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Mid-April is an excellent time with long solar
day, clear sky and soft temperatures.
